promises to give you a lift; new comedy from director of "Tuvalu"

ABSURDISTAN, showing this Thursday and Saturday, is the latest comedy by Veit Helmer, director of "Tuvalu," a whimsical 1999 film that remains one of the Cinematheque's all-time biggest crowdpleasers! "Absurdistan," which tells of a battle of the sexes in a remote mountain village in the former Soviet Union, promises to delight as well. It hasn't opened yet in New York, but it opens in Los Angeles this Friday (the day after our first showing), so you can be among the first to discover this movie!
ASHES OF TIME REDUX is definitive version of Wong Kar Wai martial arts masterwork

The Cinematheque was the only theatre in Cleveland to show Wong Kar Wai's original 1994 martial arts masterpiece "Ashes of Time." And we showed it two separate times. So now it's only fitting that we screen Wong's newly-restored, newly-revised version of the same film ASHES OF TIME REDUX, coming Thursday and Friday. The print looks and sounds great, and the mood of longing and regret identifies it as pure Wong. Essential viewing!
Charles Burns and five other graphic/comic artists explore FEAR(S) OF THE DARK
Fears of The Dark

In the new animated film FEAR(S) OF THE DARK, showing this Friday and Sunday, six prominent comic and graphic artists tell six nightmarish stories, all rendered in stark gorgeous black and white. It's Halloween in February!
GARDE A VUE & A SECRET: something old & something new from France's Claude Miller; also our "Deal of the Week"

Two films by veteran French filmmaker Claude Miller, one-time assistant to Francois Truffaut, show this weekend. His 1981 police thriller GARDE A VUE, showing Saturday night only, opens our seven-film series "The French Crime Wave," which continues through March 1. "Garde a Vue" tells of a New Year's Eve interrogation of a prominent lawyer accused of a horrendous crime (Michel Serrault) by a tenacious provincial police inspector (Lino Ventura). This gripping, rarely-shown movie is a forgotten classic! It may not be on video or DVD, and our 35mm print comes from France. Print out this email and present it at the box office on Saturday and see "Garde a Vue" for only $5! It's our "Deal of the Week."
Miller's most recent film, A SECRET, showing Saturday and Sunday, features an all-star French cast (Mathieu Amalric, Ludivine Sagnier, et al.) in an unusual Holocuast drama about buried family secrets. It's one of the best-reviewed films of 2008, with a Rotten Tomatoes "fresh rating" of 78 and an overall metacritic.com score of 72!
THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI features Oscar-winning turn by Alec Guinness

Winner of seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture, Actor, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, and Music), David Lean's WWII prison-camp epic THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is one of his greatest films. The photo above may be black and white, but the movie itself is in color and 'scope, and will be shown Sunday afternoon in a gorgeous 35mm print from the Sony Pictures studio archive. It's real big screen excitement -- with a brain!
